One of the major producers of methanol in the Middle East is Fanavaran Petrochemical Company (FPC), which operates three methanol plants in the Special Economic Zone in Bandar-e-Emam Khomeini, Iran. The third plant, which started production in 2004, has a capacity of one million tons per year and uses technology from Haldor Topsoe, a Danish company that specializes in catalytic processes.
